What Should Be Noted When Using Sizing Nozzles?
Sep 16, 2025
The sizing nozzle is a core refractory component in steel and non-ferrous metal smelting, controlling the flow rate and velocity of molten steel or metal. It is primarily installed at the bottom or side of the ladle. Its operating principle involves precisely regulating the volume of molten metal entering the crystallizer through its preset fixed orifice, ensuring stable continuous casting and uniform ingot quality.
The aperture size directly determines the pouring speed of molten metal. Uncontrolled flow can lead to issues such as uneven billet composition and surface defects. These nozzles are typically made of highly refractory materials, with zirconia-based types being common. The specific material and aperture size must be selected based on the steel grade being smelted and the process requirements.

Transportation and Storage
Sized water nozzles should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated warehouse. During storage, the plastic packaging must remain intact, and precautions against moisture must be taken.
The storage period should generally not exceed 6 months. If stored long-term in humid air, the nozzles must be baked before use.
Handle water nozzles with care during transportation and loading/unloading to prevent damage.
Installation
Before installing water nozzles, check the following:
Verify that the nozzle orifice diameter matches the specified requirement.
- Apply refractory material to the contact surface between the nozzle seat brick base and the ladle shell. Insert the seat brick into the ladle shell opening, ensuring it is level and free of tilt.
- Concurrently bake the nozzle and ladle.
- Transfer the ladle from the repair position to the ladle car on the pouring platform. Move the ladle car to the baking position, maintaining a baking temperature above 900°C.
- Move the ladle car from the baking position to the pouring position. After the ladle sliding nozzle opens for pouring, the ladle fixed-diameter nozzle should open automatically under normal conditions.
- If it fails to open automatically, use the oxygen lance to initiate flow.
- Do not direct the oxygen lance flame directly at the inner wall of the nozzle core.
- If abnormalities occur during pouring or pouring is interrupted, plug the nozzle with a nozzle plug cone.
