Differences Between Round Zirconia Nozzles and Square Zirconia Nozzles
Flow Characteristics
Round zirconia nozzle: Produces a more concentrated jet stream with a larger inclination angle. This leads to stronger lower recirculation and weaker upper recirculation, resulting in a relatively stable molten steel surface.
Square zirconia nozzle: Produces a jet stream with a smaller inclination angle and shallower penetration depth. This creates highly developed upper recirculation and stronger surface fluctuations. At high casting speeds, square nozzles generate larger surface flow velocity, making slag entrapment more likely, whereas round nozzles are less prone to slag entrapment.
Application Scenarios
Round zirconia nozzle: Suitable for continuous casting processes that require high precision in molten steel flow control and strict stability of the molten steel surface, such as casting high-grade steel varieties to ensure billet quality.
Square zirconia nozzle: Better suited for large-scale continuous casting of ordinary steel grades where higher molten steel flow rates are needed and surface level fluctuations are more tolerable.
Manufacturing Process
Round zirconia nozzle: Uses a relatively mature and simple manufacturing process. Typically produced by pressing and assembling, where the zirconia insert is pre-sintered, placed into a mold, filled with alumina-carbon material, pressed, and then sintered at high temperature.
Square zirconia nozzle: Due to its special shape, mold design and manufacturing are more complex, with stricter requirements for pressing and sintering processes to ensure dimensional accuracy and consistent quality.
Service Life
Round zirconia nozzle: Generally offers a longer service life under the same working conditions. Its uniform jet distribution causes even erosion of the nozzle wall, reducing the likelihood of localized wear.
Square zirconia nozzle: Due to its flow characteristics, certain areas may experience greater erosion forces, leading to faster localized wear and shorter overall service life.
