When Should the Metering Nozzle Be Replaced?
Oct 22, 2025
The metering nozzle plays a crucial role in the continuous casting process, as its performance directly affects the quality of the cast billets and overall production efficiency. Therefore, regular inspection and maintenance of the metering nozzle are essential. When the nozzle becomes severely damaged and begins to affect normal operation, it must be replaced promptly. So, under what circumstances should the metering nozzle be replaced?

1. Severe Wear of the Metering Nozzle
During use, the metering nozzle is subjected to continuous erosion and scouring by molten steel. Over time, the inner wall gradually wears out, causing the inner diameter to enlarge. This dimensional change affects the accuracy and quality of the cast billets. Once the wear exceeds the allowable tolerance - for example, when the inner diameter becomes too large - the nozzle should be replaced with a new one.
2. Steel Entrapment in the Metering Nozzle
Steel entrapment occurs when gaps or erosion in the metering nozzle allow molten steel to penetrate into crevices, forming inclusions. This not only degrades billet quality but can also cause serious production incidents such as tundish leakage. If steel entrapment is detected, the metering nozzle must be taken out of service and replaced immediately.
3. Material Aging or Degradation of the Metering Nozzle
Metering nozzles are typically made from high-temperature- and corrosion-resistant materials such as alumina-carbon refractories. However, prolonged exposure to extreme conditions-high temperature, pressure, and chemical corrosion-can cause gradual aging or degradation of the material. As a result, the nozzle's performance declines and it may no longer meet production requirements. In such cases, the metering nozzle should be replaced with a new one.
4. Damage Caused by Improper Installation or Operation
Improper handling during installation or use may also lead to nozzle damage. For example, failing to clean debris from the sliding gate track or applying uneven force during replacement can cause structural damage to the nozzle. When such damage occurs, the nozzle must be replaced promptly. Additionally, subsequent operations should be carried out following proper procedures to prevent recurrence.
5. Changes in Production Requirements
When production conditions change-such as adjustments in billet size, variations in molten steel composition, or modifications in casting parameters-it may be necessary to replace the metering nozzle with one of a different specification or material to suit the new process requirements. The replacement should be made based on actual production needs.
The timing for replacing a metering nozzle primarily depends on several factors: the degree of wear, the presence of steel entrapment, material aging or degradation, installation and operational integrity, and changes in production requirements.
To ensure casting safety and maintain billet quality, regular inspection and maintenance of the metering nozzle are essential, and timely replacement should be carried out whenever necessary.
