What Are the Common Types of Zirconia Nozzles?

Sep 18, 2025

In the continuous casting process, various types of nozzles are used. Besides withstanding high temperatures, these nozzles must also resist the corrosive effects of molten steel. Zirconia nozzles, made primarily from zirconia, not only fulfill the basic functions of a nozzle but also offer enhanced performance. So, what types of zirconia nozzles are commonly used?

1. Sizing Nozzle

 Homogeneous Sizing Nozzle

Directly mixed zircon sand and zirconia oxide in a specific ratio, formed, dried, and sintered at 1620-1650°C. This type features uniform composition, properties, and structure with high reliability, but carries higher costs.

 Vibration-Formed Sizing Nozzle

Consists of a core, body, and iron shell. The core is a composite of zircon and zirconia, while the body is made of high-alumina material. During manufacturing, the core is formed first, then bonded with the high-alumina body and steel shell through vibration compaction. The formed nozzle requires drying. Its advantages include low cost and a non-removable core. However, prolonged use may cause the steel shell to melt, posing a risk of molten steel leakage.

 Insert-Type Sizing Nozzle

The shell is made of high-alumina material, while the core is a composite of zircon and zirconia. The nozzle body and core are manufactured separately and then bonded together using refractory mortar. This design not only reduces costs compared to homogeneous sizing nozzles but also offers superior thermal stability over direct composite sizing nozzles.

2. Quick-Change Nozzle

CNC quick-change nozzles are widely used internationally. The outer layer of tundish quick-change nozzles is formed through two methods: compression molding or casting. These nozzles can be matched to the service life of the tundish working lining to meet continuous production demands.

Zirconia nozzles are a common material choice. To enhance production efficiency, various nozzle replacement techniques are employed. A prevalent method is rapid replacement of fixed-diameter nozzles. To fully leverage this technology's advantages, operators require thorough training to master its application.
