Guide to Common Problems and Troubleshooting for Sliding Gate Systems
Apr 20, 2026
The sliding nozzle system is the core flow control device in continuous steel casting production, directly determining the continuity of the casting process, production safety, and billet quality. Under harsh operating conditions-including temperatures exceeding 1,500°C, severe erosion, and thermal shock-the system is prone to failures such as steel leakage, blockages, loss of control, and failure to open. At best, these issues affect casting efficiency; at worst, they can lead to safety incidents and cause significant losses.
As a specialized manufacturer with over 20 years of experience in continuous casting refractories, Changtai Zirconia has synthesized field application data from thousands of steel mills to identify six major categories of high-frequency failures in sliding nozzle systems, along with their causes, troubleshooting methods, and preventive measures. Concurrently, we have launched highly stable zirconia sliding plates and customized sliding nozzle mechanisms. By addressing these pain points from the three dimensions of materials, structure, and process, we help steel mills achieve stable production, reduce costs, and improve efficiency.
Sliding nozzle fails to open automatically (cannot open/failed to establish flow)
Symptoms
After the sliding nozzle opens, only a small amount of slag flows out; molten steel cannot flow smoothly, requiring oxygen blowing to assist in opening the nozzle.
Core Causes
- Nozzle condensation:Low superheat of molten steel and insufficient nozzle preheating result in cold steel blockage inside the nozzle;
- Slide plate/nozzle blockage:Accumulation of high-melting-point inclusions such as Al₂O₃ in the molten steel causes obstruction of the flow channel;
- Mechanical jamming:Misaligned slide plate installation, mechanical deformation, or residual steel and slag causing the slide plate to jam, preventing it from sliding.
★ Troubleshooting Methods
- Minor blockage:Perform professional oxygen purging (low oxygen flow rate, slow insertion) to avoid damaging the slide plate's working surface;
- Severe jamming:Immediately stop pouring, replace the slide plate/nozzle assembly, and clean residual debris from the mechanism;
- Inadequate flow:Re-heat the nozzle to the specified temperature and check the alignment of the slide plate.
★ Prevention Plan
- Use Changtai high-purity zirconia nozzles/slides, which feature dense, smooth inner walls to reduce the adhesion of inclusions and the formation of cold steel;
- Standardized installation:Thoroughly bake the nozzle (≥800°C) and ensure precise alignment of the slide to prevent jamming caused by installation deviations.
Steel Leakage at Slide Interfaces/Joints (Steel Seepage/Penetration)
Symptoms
Molten steel leaks from joints such as between the upper and lower slides, between the upper nozzle and the upper slide, and between the lower slide and the lower nozzle.
Root Causes
- Mechanical issues:Deformation of the sliding mechanism, spring failure, insufficient clamping force, uneven pressure on the slide surfaces, or gaps;
- Material defects:Microcracks in the slide plates, poor flatness, thermal shock cracking, or failure of sealing surfaces;
- Operational errors:Excessive back-and-forth movement of the slide plates, or forcing them to slide after steel has become lodged, which widens the gap and causes steel leakage.
★ Troubleshooting Methods
- Minor steel leakage:Continue pouring while ensuring safety and monitoring the leakage points; replace the components immediately after the pour is completed;
- Severe steel leakage:Immediately hoist the slide away from the pouring position, stop pouring, and replace the entire slide assembly and nozzle components;
- Repair mechanism:Correct deformed components, replace failed springs, and retighten to ensure uniform surface pressure.
★ Prevention Measures
- Select Changtai thermal shock-resistant zirconia composite slide plates: resistant to thermal shock, crack-free, high flatness, and strong sealing performance;
- Mechanical maintenance:Regularly inspect springs, locking mechanisms, and sliding carriages to ensure no deformation and stable contact pressure.
Cracking and Spalling of Slides/Sprues
Symptoms
During operation, cracks, chipping, or spalling occur on the slides or sprues, leading to steel leakage or blockages.
Root Causes
- Thermal shock: Excessive temperature differences or insufficient preheating cause thermal stresses to exceed the material's tolerance limit, resulting in cracking;
- Poor Material Quality: Low material purity, poor sintering, and insufficient strength result in poor thermal shock resistance and erosion resistance;
- Mechanical Damage: Cracks caused by impact during installation, collisions during hoisting, or uneven stress distribution due to structural misalignment;
- Oxidation Degradation: Oxidation of carbon components in the slide plate leads to a porous structure, reduced strength, and susceptibility to spalling.
★ Troubleshooting Methods
- Immediately stop pouring and replace the slide; do not use cracked slides to prevent crack propagation and steel leakage accidents;
- Inspect installation and operating procedures to eliminate causes of mechanical damage.
★ Prevention Plan
- Use Changtai's stabilized zirconia-reinforced slide plates: Incorporating stabilizers and high-temperature sintering, thermal shock resistance is improved by over 50%;
- Anti-oxidation coating treatment: Effectively inhibits high-temperature oxidation and maintains structural stability;
- Standardized operations: Handle with care, ensure thorough preheating, and avoid violent impacts or collisions.
Loose or Detached Spout
Symptoms
During pouring, the spout becomes loose, shifts, or even detaches, causing the steel flow to diverge, resulting in steel leakage and slag entrainment.
Root Causes
- Fastening Failure: Deformation of the fastening sleeve, wear of the latches, or insufficient clamping force, leading to an unstable spout;
- Improper Installation: Insufficient support, or a loose fit between the spout and the lower slide plate;
- Improper operation: Pulling the slide plate over a long distance with the nozzle attached, causing the nozzle to loosen due to lateral forces;
- Corrosion damage: Corrosion at the base of the nozzle, dimensional changes, and increased clearance.
★ Troubleshooting
- Minor loosening: Carefully control the steel flow, complete the current pour as soon as possible, and reinstall or replace the nozzle after stopping the pour;
- Detachment/ Severe steel leakage: Immediately stop pouring, replace the nozzle, tightening sleeve, and related components.
★ Prevention Plan
- Select Changtai high-strength composite nozzles: Reinforced base, precise dimensions, tight fit, and erosion resistance;
- Optimize installation: Thoroughly bake, secure tightly, and ensure no looseness;
- Standardize operations: Avoid long-stroke sliding with the nozzle in place to reduce lateral forces.
