Used as inoculant and nodulizer in cast iron industry. CAST iron is an important metal material in modern industry. It is cheaper than steel, easy to melt and smelt, has excellent casting performance and much better anti-seismic ability than steel.

Ductile iron in particular has mechanical properties equal to or close to those of steel. The addition of certain amount of silicon iron can prevent the formation of carbide in iron and promote the precipitation and spheroidization of graphite. Therefore, silicon iron is an important inoculant and spheroidizer in the production of ductile iron.

Use As reductant in ferroalloy production. Not only is there a large chemical affinity between silicon and oxygen, but ferrosilicon is low in carbon. Therefore, high silicon ferrosilicon (or siliceous alloy) is a kind of reductant commonly used in the production of low carbon ferroalloy in ferroalloy industry.

Other uses. Ground or atomized ferrosilicon powder can be used as suspension phase in mineral processing industry. In the welding rod manufacturing industry can be used as welding rod coating. High silicon ferrosilicon can be used in the manufacture of silicone and other products in the chemical industry. Among these uses, the steel making industry, the foundry industry and the ferroalloy industry are the largest users of ferrosilicon. Together, they consume more than 90% of ferrosilicon. Among the various grades of ferrosilicon, the most widely used is 75% ferrosilicon. In the steel-making industry, about 3-5kg75% ferrosilicon is consumed for every 1T of steel produced。
