What is the function of a tundish nozzle?

Oct 25, 2025

The tundish nozzle plays a critical role in continuous casting, precisely controlling the flow of molten steel from the tundish to the mold. It ensures that steel enters the mold in a stable and uniform manner, acting as a key flow-control component that connects the tundish and the mold.

Core Functions

1. Flow Control
By adjusting the orifice size, shape, and matching slide gate structure, the tundish nozzle regulates both the flow rate and velocity of molten steel. This allows the flow to match the solidification speed inside the mold, preventing excessive fluctuations on the molten steel surface.

2. Stable Casting Stream
The structural design of the nozzle-such as measuring nozzles or submerged entry nozzles (SENs)-enables molten steel to enter the mold in a stable, columnar, or divergent stream. This minimizes impact on the mold walls, reduces slag entrainment, and lowers the risk of secondary oxidation of molten steel.

3. Steel Protection
The submerged entry nozzle (SEN), in particular, extends below the molten steel surface inside the mold. This design isolates the molten steel from air exposure and guides the steel flow to form an optimal flow field in the mold. As a result, non-metallic inclusions can float up more easily, improving the cleanliness and quality of the steel.

Common types and characteristics

Type Main Features Application Scenarios
Fixed Diameter Nozzle (FDN) Fixed inner diameter, flow rate controlled by stopper rod or slide gate, simple structure Continuous casting of small billets and large billets
Submerged Entry Nozzle (SEN) With immersion depth, side holes can be designed to guide flow field, excellent in oxidation resistance and slag entrapment prevention Continuous casting of slabs, round billets and high-quality billets
