Ferrosilicon is an alloy of iron and silicon. Ferrosilicon is a kind of iron-silicon alloy, which is made from coke, steel chips, quartz (or silica) and smelted by electric furnace. Since silicon and oxygen can be easily combined to form silicon dioxide, ferrosilicon is often used as a deoxidizer in steel making, and since the formation of SIO2 gives off a lot of heat, it is beneficial to increase the temperature of molten steel while deoxidizing. At the same time, ferrosilicon can be used as alloying element additive in low alloy structural steel, spring steel, bearing steel, heat-resistant steel and electrical silicon steel.
Used as deoxidizer and alloying agent in steel-making industry. In order to obtain the steel with qualified chemical composition and ensure the quality of steel, deoxidation must be carried out in the final stage of steel-making. The chemical affinity between silicon and oxygen is very large, so ferrosilicon is a strong deoxidizer for steel-making and is used for precipitation and diffusion deoxidation. The addition of a certain amount of silicon to steel can significantly increase the strength, hardness and elasticity of the steel, therefore, ferrosilicon is also used as alloying agent in smelting structural steel (0.40-1.75% silicon, tool steel (Sio. 30-1.8%) , spring steel (Sio. 40-2.8%) and transformer steel (SI 2.81-4.8%) . At the same time, it is an effective new technology to improve the quality of steel, reduce the cost and save the use of iron by improving the shape of inclusion and reducing the content of gas elements in liquid steel. It is especially suitable for Deoxidization of continuous casting molten steel. The practice proves that ferrosilicon not only meets the deoxidization requirements of steelmaking, but also has the advantages of desulfurization, high specific gravity and strong penetration.
In addition, in the steel-making industry, ferro-silicon powder can give off a lot of heat by burning at high temperature, which is often used as heating agent of Ingot cap to improve the quality and recovery of Ingot.
